We got on the train after spending the day at Kuranda. KSR (Kuranda Scenic Railway) is one of the historic wonders of Australia. Extremely expensive to build, with steep cut-outs, concrete tunnels and numerous bridges on a long and windy route, the railway was finished by teams of workers (with help from the public). The building of the line wasn’t helped by difficult territory, deaths from fever and accidents and being over schedule.
If you read my last train blog, you’ll know that I got “plagued by boredom” on the Gulflander. This time I was plagued by awesomeness! There was more to see such as waterfalls, gorges, views of Cairns and the sea and we passed through 15 tunnels.
The tunnels were black, the water dark, the water falls white, the gorges green and the ocean blue in a sea of colours one after the other, black, green, green/blue and blue with the train going through!
The KSR has 13 carriages, 2 diesel engines, commentary, gold class and a little booklet that is full of information.
I found it great, though I didn’t go the whole way. I only went to Freshwater, the 2nd last stop on the line.
Loved the Karanda Scenic Rail & Atherton tablelands- macca.
