Ryan’s Journal: Days 43 - 46

Day 43
Distance travelled: 152km
We woke up and didn’t have to pack up for the first time in a while. Dad was cooking breakfast over the fire; bacon and eggs!
We drove up to a lookout at the Gulf and walked to the water from there. The water was a beautiful bluey-green colour, but we knew it contained blue-box jellyfish, sting rays and crocs. We watchfully walked to the edge of the water across mud flats and mud.
We were recommended to go to a billabong just off the main road, so we went there for lunch. The water there was covered in lily-pads. There we lots of birds flying and walking around.
King Ash Bay is known for fishing, but everyone travels 30km down river in boats to get to all the fish, so without a boat, Dad and I fished off Batten Point but with no luck. It was an awesome spot though. We sat by the water, watching out for crocs, looking out over the water and the trees beyond.
Day 44
Distance travelled: 440km
After two nights at King Ash Bay, we had to leave, so we packed up, again. We were driving over the NT and QLD border today, getting to Kingfisher Camp. We stopped at the border and walked across into QLD. The best part of the day was at Hells Gate Roadhouse. We stopped for lunch but were approached by some German tourists who had hit a tree on the road. They couldn’t continue in their car so had to leave everything that they couldn’t carry behind. They came with a box of food! Including some delicacies like Nutella and cream!!!
Kingfisher Creek
We made it to Kingfisher Camp, which was beautiful! There was a river about thirty seconds away and the campground was open with only a few trees, and other people around.
Day 45
Distance travelled: 163km
We only had one night at KFC (Kingfisher Camp) so we had a quick brekkie and set off to our booked campsite at Lawn Hill Gorge. Again, about thirty seconds away there was a river, which is a beautiful green-blue colour. We quickly set up and then went for a dip in the twenty-five degree water.
Olive Python - that I almost stepped on!
Somehow, Dad managed to get us to go for a walk at sunset. Which started out as a ‘Croc hunt’ but we ended up climbing to the top of Constance Range. We walked back in the dark. But we did see an Olive Python, the first snake we’ve seen all trip!
Day 46
Distance Travelled: 0km!
We planned to do a Canoe down the gorge to the falls up the top, but for the second time this trip, there were no canoe’s to hire, except one. Dad, Mum and Jackson went in a canoe to the falls while Nick and I were in inflatable tyre tubes! Nick and I somehow paddled up stream about 2km and made it to the falls, where Mum and Dad where already. On the way back, Nick and I generously donated our hard work of paddling upstream and let Jackson and Mum float back down.
Again, Dad got us to walk, this time further though. We did a walk to some Aboriginal rock paintings, to some Cascades and to a lookout, where we walked round the top of a little island where we watched the sunset.
