Day 34
Distance travelled: 50km
Because of Darwin’s history, we had to look at a couple of museums, yesterday we did a Cyclone Tracy one and today a military museum. The Darwin Military Museum was about the Darwin bombing in WW2. It had old pistols, uniforms and turrets from the crashed planes and destroyed city. There was also a short movie, recreating the bombing. It also had an outside exhibition with tanks, vehicles and an old underground bunker.
Still keeping up with our Darwin tradition, Mum and Dad met up with some friends, which was carefully planned to be right near the wave pool! For about two hours, Nick, Jackson and I swum around in the pool, while swells rolled over us. It was fun.
It was our last night in Darwin so we decided to go out for dinner with Allan and Jude, our hosts. We went to ‘The Warf’, where there were many different food stands and meals to choose from. So we spent our last night in Darwin eating dinner while looking out over the ocean with the sun setting behind it.
Day 35
Distance travelled: 335km
We had to reluctantly leave Darwin to head for Kakadu. We had lunch at the Bowali information centre before heading to Ubirr rock, where some rock art is spread out over many different rocks. Then we went to our campsite at Merl. Merl was a remote campsite, with bush where ever you looked, which we liked. We had a fire for the first time in ages and dad cooked dinner on there. Then we sat up playing cards, which somehow dad won.
Day 36
Distance travelled: 184km
We packed up at Merl, and headed into Jabiru to get some food. We went to Nourlangie rock, which has more rock art then had lunch at Yellow Water.
We then continued driving to our campsite at Garnamarr and set up. Garnamarr is a campsite near Jim Jim falls and Twin Falls.
Day 37
Distance travelled: 32km
The top of Twin Falls |
Today was an awesome day! As much as dad likes museums and galleries, I love swimming. We headed down a rough 4WD track, past the turnoff to Jim Jim Falls and then through a deep river to get to Twin Falls. We got there early so we could walk to the top of the falls where there were a series of rock pools that we could swim in. One pool was about four meters deep. After the long walk up to the top, we swam around in the cool pool for ages. We still had a few more places to go to, so we walked back down and got back into the car. We had booked a ferry to the bottom of Twin Falls. The bottom of Twin Falls was beautiful. It had a sandy beach and crystal clear water in a large plunge pool. Unfortunately, we couldn’t swim because of crocs, but it was still an amazing sight. We caught the ferry back to the car park and then drove back to Jim Jim Falls. Again, we had to go through the river. Last time it was a success going through, but this time, once we’d made our way through, we had water everywhere!
Jim Jim was just as good as Twin. But you could also swim! We walked over rocks and through some bush to get to the plunge pool, but it was worth it. There were two places to swim, a cold pool under the waterfall and a big, warm pool in the sun. They were both very deep, and we were able, if we wanted to, to jump off rocks and into the pools. We spent the rest of the day there, before heading back to camp and having dinner.
Day 38
Distance travelled: 390km
We left camp early so we could do a walk along the Yellow Water (a famous area that contains most of Kakadu’s birdlife). We had to leave early because it gets really hot in the afternoon. So we made it to the walk, and this time, Mum was driving around to meet us at the other end. We started the walk with no trouble, but we came to a point where the bridge over the Yellow Water ended. We soon found out that the rest of the track was closed due to flooding. So we walked around to Cooinda (where the walk ended) and met mum there. We had an awesome iced chocolate there!!!!
We then drove off towards Gunlom, where we planned to camp but in the heat of the day, we decided to swim in another plunge pool! It was a large plunge pool with a waterfall at one end. All of our family swam to the waterfall and sat on the rocks near it. We swam around for a while but then decided we should go set up camp. We did set up camp, but not at Gunlom. We decided instead that we had time to travel all the way to Katherine, and we did. It was dusk when we arrived at the resort, so we set up camp quickly and went out for dinner. We went to a Chinese restaurant that we all loved.
Distance travelled: 73km
We were woken early by Dad. We went out to Nitmiluk National Park to Katherine Gorge. We climbed to the top of the gorge, and then went down to the cultural centre. We then went for a canoe down the gorge. While we were canoeing, mum went on a cruise down the gorge. We finished before her so took the opportunity to have a fish. We didn’t catch anything, but it was fun standing by the river, watching boats and canoes float by. When mum got back we had lunch, and then went back to camp.
The rest of the afternoon was uneventful. We did some journaling, but mostly read and just chilled.
After dinner we went for a swim in the pool at the resort. I don’t know why, but we were swimming after dark in the pool. It was freezing, and Dad decided it would be fun to pull everyone (except mum) into the pool. We got out, colder than when we went in, and went off to have a shower to warm up.
